This two-day supplemental instructor-led course provides students from small and medium businesses the knowledge and skills to install and configure System Center 2012 R2 Operations Manager for their environments. This course is offered as a bundle with 10964C: Cloud & Datacenter Monitoring with System Center Operations Manager.

For groups that would prefer to use this SMB focused supplement in a 10964C class our recommendation is to teach all six modules from the supplement on days 1 and 2 and then continue with 10964C. The following modules from 10964C would not be taught in this scenario: 10964C Module 1 10964C Module 2 10964C Module 6 10964C Module 9 10964C Module 10.

Audience Profile

This course is intended for SMB IT professionals with basic Windows Server, Active Directory and network configuration and management experience.

Prerequisites

  • Familiarity with PC hardware and devices.
  • Experience supporting Windows-based systems.
  • Basic experience authoring and editing batch and script files.
  • Experience reviewing Windows application and service logs.
  • Experience configuring or supporting distributed application environments.
  • Working knowledge of Windows Server 2008 operating system and network configuration.
  • Working Knowledge of Active Directory.

Course outline

Module 1: Introduction to Operations Manager

Module Overview

This module gives the student a high-level view of System Center 2012 R2 Operations Manager. Students new to the value of SCOM will learn about its benefits. Students familiar with SCOM 2007 will also benefit with an introductory look at the changes manifested in SCOM 2012 R2.

Module 2: Deploying Operations Manager for the Small and Medium Business

Module Overview

This module explains how Active Directory and SQL Server 2012 R2 integrate with and support System Center 2012 R2 Operations Manager. In addition this module allows students the opportunity to plan deployment of SCOM and do a SCOM install in a virtual environment which simulates what is often seen in today’s enterprises.

Install Operations Manager.
Navigate the Operations Console.
Modify the views of the Operations Console based on job requirements.
Secure the Operations Console considering the ‘Principle of Least Privilege’.
Understand the changes to the Operations Manager Web Console.

Module 3: Global Management Group Settings and Notifications

Module Overview

This module covers the creation and value of Management Groups. In addition Resource Pools will be demonstrated as a way to provide for high availability. Applying Global Management Group settings and Management Server specific settings used to override Global settings can allow for more customized System Center 2012 R2 Operations Manager deployments. Finally Notifications will be used to ensure that those information technology professionals tasked with maintaining the enterprise systems have real time access to anomalous conditions.

Module Overview

This module introduces the concept of Management Pack Templates to create complete monitoring solutions. Using these methods monitoring moves outside the realm of agents installed on systems to external confirmation of access and performance.

Module Overview

This module explains how to use the power of Distributed Applications to monitor not just a system, but rather all of the infrastructure components necessary for Line of Business applications to function reliably. Students will see a big picture view of how applications, systems and network devices work together to insure consistent behavior.
